KOLKATA, November 25: Former champions East Bengal made a winning start in the ONGC I-League defeating Viva Kerala 2-0 at the Barasat Stadium on Sunday, after 72 minutes of indolence the red-and-gold brigade got their first goal through Brazilian striker Edmilson and six minutes later Alvito D’Cunha’s 30-yard pile driver crashed into the net.
The 2-0 victory might have given Subrata Bhattacharya’s boys three points but you can bet he would not be satisfied.
For the Fed Cup winners neither had style nor substance. And it was only after Ashim Biswas’s induction, in place of an out-of-sorts Macdonald Mukansi, that the hosts managed to show some purpose. Till then it was more like going through the motions and waiting for a largesse from the rookies of Gods Own Country which the visitors refused to oblige.
